What is Stress

Stress is a feeling that’s created when we react to particular events. It’s the body’s way of rising to a challenge and preparing to meet a tough situation with focus, strength, stamina, and heightened awareness. Stress is a natural human response to pressure when faced with challenging and potentially dangerous situations. This pressure is about the demands we place on ourselves as well as what’s happening around us. Stress is part of being alive and some stress helps increase our alertness and energy to meet challenging situations.


Body Symptoms of Stress


Your body talks all the time and most of the time we don’t listen to it. Stress will show up in some of these ways. Stress will show up differently in every person.


  • Chest – tightness, palpitations, pain, ‘pounding’ or ‘racing’ heart

  • Stomach – knots, pain, butterflies, nausea, indigestion, upsets, ulcers, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome

  • Throat – tightness, ‘fur-balls’, impacts on communication

  • Mouth, Teeth – grinding teeth, holding, cold-sores Jaw – holding, tightness, pain, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

  • Syndrome Head – headaches, tightness, over-thinking, dizziness, insomnia

  • Shoulders – sore, tightness, pain, frozen shoulders

  • Neck – sore, holding, pain, stiffness, muscle tension

  • Back – back pain Arms & Hands – stiffness, clenched, joint pain, arthritis, sweaty palms

  • Skin – problems, itchy, unexplained rashes, skin irritations Eyes – itchy, sore, tired
